What you actually own when you buy through Admirals
A price comparison stops at the commission. This page starts after it: whether the trade leaves you holding a security or a contract, whose name that security is registered in, and what the document Admirals Europe Ltd (Cyprus, CySEC 201/13) publishes says becomes of it if the firm fails.
Which entity and which product this covers
Applies to Admirals Europe Ltd, licensed by CySEC under number 201/13, under its terms and conditions of 19.11.2024. One entity sells both product lines under one contract, and the split is by account type rather than by company: real shares and ETFs are the securities bought through the Invest.MT5 account, while CFDs are a separate product. The same contract has the client acknowledge that securities held with the custodian may not be distinguishable from the custodian's own. The custodian is not named anywhere in the document, and the referenced securities-trading terms and securities risk disclosure could not be retrieved.
Do you own real shares when you buy through Admirals?
A real security — but not one registered in your name. Admirals Europe Ltd (Cyprus, CySEC 201/13) holds client investments through a nominee or custodian, pooled in an omnibus account together with other clients. You are the beneficial owner: the shares are yours rather than the firm's, but they are not separately identifiable as yours in the register.
“You consent to the Securities being safekept on a nominee account (including on a custodian's nominee account) along with the Securities belonging to the custodian or other clients.”
What happens to your holdings if Admirals fails?
Here is what Admirals Europe Ltd (Cyprus, CySEC 201/13) says in its own document, in its own words — including the part that qualifies it.
“We are covered by the Cypriot Investor Compensation Fund. Should we be unable to meet our liabilities in respect of investment business, if you make a valid claim, you may be entitled to redress from the ICF in respect of the investments that we arrange or deal in for you.”
The counterweight in the same document
“You consent to the use of your Securities safekept in the interests or on your account or another client or to the pledging or encumbering of such Securities (including a set-off at the expense of the Securities).”
Does Admirals sell CFDs on shares, and what changes if it does?
Alongside real shares, Admirals also sells contracts for difference on equities. That is a different product with a different answer: no underlying instrument changes hands on either side, and the position is an agreement with Admirals Europe Ltd (Cyprus, CySEC 201/13) rather than something you hold.
“When trading CFDs you are not trading on a regulated market or exchange. You will enter directly into a contract with us in respect of the underlying financial instrument or thing on which the price of the CFD is based.”
Can a loss at Admirals follow you past your balance?
Not as a retail client of Admirals Europe Ltd (Cyprus, CySEC 201/13) — negative balance protection caps your loss at the account balance. That protection is tied to retail classification: if you ask to be reclassified as a professional client, it goes away.
