What brokers really charge to convert currency

The mid-market rate is only half the story — the FX markup is where brokers quietly differ.

Every time you fund a foreign-currency account, buy a US stock from a EUR balance, or withdraw, your broker converts currency and adds a markup over the mid-market rate. That markup ranges from near-zero to well over 1% and is rarely shown upfront. The table above compares the verified markup for each broker, so you see the real cost — not the marketing.

Where FX costs hide

Mid-market vs broker rate

The headline ECB rate is what banks trade at. Brokers add a spread — typically 0.2%–1.5% — between you and that rate. That gap is the real cost.

Deposit and withdrawal differ

Some brokers absorb deposit conversion but charge on withdrawal. Others do the opposite. Total round-trip cost matters, not the headline fee.

Account currency matters

Opening a USD account when you earn EUR means two conversions every time. If you trade US stocks long term, consider a multi-currency broker.

Where do the exchange rates come from?

Mid-market rates come from the European Central Bank (ECB) via the Frankfurter API, refreshed every 30 minutes. For currencies the ECB doesn't publish (e.g. KZT, UAH, BYN) we use a secondary live source, and the tool labels which source each rate came from.

Are these the rates I'll get at my broker?

Not exactly. Brokers add an FX markup on top of the mid-market rate. The comparison table above shows the verified markup each broker charges, so you can see the real cost before you fund an account.

Why is my currency not listed?

The ECB publishes about 30 currencies. For others we fall back to a secondary live source, so common CIS currencies (KZT, UAH, BYN) are covered. If a currency is still missing, convert via USD or EUR as an intermediary.
