DEGIRO is a Dutch online broker founded in 2008, now part of the publicly-listed flatexDEGIRO AG (Frankfurt Stock Exchange, ticker FTK), regulated by BaFin under German banking law. Client deposits are protected by German deposit insurance up to €100,000. Securities are covered by the German investor compensation scheme at 90% of the loss, up to €20,000.
DEGIRO's focus is low-cost stock and ETF investing: €2 per US stock trade (€1 commission + €1 handling) and €4.90 on most European exchanges (€3.90 + €1), with the client's home exchange cheaper. ETF Core Selection trades cost just €1 handling. FX conversion is 0.25%. No custody fee, no inactivity fee, no withdrawal fee. No minimum deposit. Covers real shares, ETFs, bonds, warrants, options and futures — no CFDs.
Key trade-offs: not available in most CIS countries (EU/UK residents only), no fractional shares (each position requires the full share price), and the platform UI has not kept pace with newer entrants like eToro or Trading 212.

What you'll actually pay
Estimated yearly cost in three scenarios. Only verified fees are counted. Each trade moves a twelfth of the portfolio; per-share commissions assume a $50 share; currency conversion is counted once, on the whole portfolio. An inactivity fee is shown separately and applies only if its condition is met.

Publicly-listed parent — full annual report transparency
flatexDEGIRO AG is listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange (ticker FTK). Quarterly earnings, audited financials and BaFin supervisory oversight are public record. Rare among retail brokers — most (eToro, J2T, T212) are private.
€2 per US stock trade, €4.90 on most European exchanges
US stocks: €1.00 commission + €1.00 handling. Most European exchanges: €3.90 + €1.00 handling, with the client's home exchange cheaper. ETF Core Selection gives free trades (€1.00 handling only). At 10 trades a month that is €20 on US stocks or €49 on most European exchanges, against €0 at XTB/T212 — which have their own EU-only or threshold constraints.
Real assets only — no CFDs in the account
You own shares, not derivatives. Dividends are real cash. Voting rights apply. No overnight financing cost. For long-term buy-and-hold, this simplifies taxes and removes leverage risk entirely.

Not available in CIS countries — EU/UK residents only
DEGIRO does not accept clients from Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Georgia, Belarus, Uzbekistan or Turkey. CIS investors should consider Interactive Brokers or Tickmill.
No fractional shares — each position requires the full share price
You cannot buy $50 of NVDA at ~$130 per share. For portfolios under $5k, this limits diversification. Contrast with eToro and Trading 212, which both offer fractional shares: from $10 at eToro, from €1 at Trading 212's EU company.
Platform UI has not kept pace with newer entrants
Functional and stable, but the desktop and app design is visibly older-generation. No integrated research, no screener, no social layer. Pure execution tool.
Compensation caps at €20,000 — below FCA (£85k) / SIPC ($500k)
Investor compensation tops out at the listed cap — well below the FCA (£85k) or SIPC ($500k). Matters most if your balance exceeds it.
No negative balance protection
