Why choosing a broker in Poland is more than commissions
For an investor resident in Poland, picking a broker rarely boils down to the lowest commission. Four parallel constraints weigh on a portfolio more than a few cents of pricing differences.
- Supervision and deposit protection. Polish brokers fall under KNF and KDPW (Krajowy Depozyt Papierów Wartościowych, the national central securities depository) — compensation up to EUR 22,000. CySEC — ICF EUR 20,000, FCA — FSCS GBP 85,000, SEC/FINRA — SIPC USD 500,000.
- Belka tax and reporting. A 19% tax on capital gains, settled via PIT-38 (the annual capital-gains tax return). Polish brokers (XTB, mBank eMakler, BOSSA) issue a PIT-8C (the broker's annual gain/loss summary used to prepare PIT-38). Foreign brokers require you to recalculate every trade into PLN at the NBP (National Bank of Poland) exchange rate from the business day preceding the trade.
- IKE and IKZE. Tax-advantaged accounts (Indywidualne Konto Emerytalne — individual retirement account; Indywidualne Konto Zabezpieczenia Emerytalnego — individual pension security account) available only at Polish institutions. 2026 limits: IKE ~PLN 23,472, IKZE PLN 9,388 / 14,083. A foreign broker cannot offer IKE or IKZE.
- PRIIPs and market access. Regulation 1286/2014 requires a KID (Key Information Document) in Polish — most US ETFs (VOO, VTI, QQQ) do not publish one, which makes them unavailable to EU retail investors. Alternatives: Irish UCITS (VUAA, VUSA) or a MiFID II professional-client upgrade. Details in the PRIIPs guide.
Fees are visible. Protection, taxes, IKE/IKZE, and PRIIPs are the silent factors that, over a 10-20 year horizon, weigh more.

Choice by priority
In each category below we name at least two candidates — the label "best broker for Poles" pinned to a single provider is marketing.
Low commissions for active trading
Interactive Brokers ($0.005/share, min. $1) and DEGIRO (€1 per US trade) are the cost leaders. XTB — 0% up to €100,000/month, cheapest at low volume. Run your volume through the fee calculator.
Polish IKE / IKZE account
In this lineup, only XTB offers IKE and IKZE. Outside the list — mBank eMakler, BOSSA (BOŚ), BM Pekao, BM PKO BP. The IKE limit (~PLN 23,472) and IKZE limit (~PLN 9,388/14,083) are modest, but the exemption from the 19% tax over 20-30 years compounds into a significant difference.
Automatic PIT-8C
XTB issues PIT-8C automatically. Polish bank-affiliated brokers (mBank, BOSSA, BM Pekao) do too. Every foreign broker (Admirals, DEGIRO, EXANTE, Freedom Finance, IBKR, Just2Trade) requires you to file PIT-38 yourself.
GPW access + foreign markets
XTB routes orders to GPW and offers access to 16 foreign exchanges. Polish bank-affiliated brokers (mBank eMakler, BOSSA, BM Pekao) run GPW accounts, but their foreign-market offering tends to be more expensive or narrower.
Active CFD / FX trading
XTB (xStation), Admirals (MT4/MT5), and Just2Trade all advertise CFD/FX support. All are covered by EU regulation with the ESMA disclaimer (74% of retail accounts lose).
HNW investor with a portfolio above EUR 500,000
The $10,000 threshold at EXANTE and DMA pricing make sense at scale. The Pro tier at Interactive Brokers after MiFID II classification unlocks access to US ETFs. The upgrade requires verification of assets and experience.

Taxes in Poland — what an investor must know
Belka tax — 19% on capital gains. A flat rate on income = revenue − cost of acquisition − commissions. Stock losses are deductible against stock gains for 5 consecutive years, but cannot offset other sources. Foreign dividends (US after W-8BEN — 15% withheld at source) — the investor tops up the 4% difference in PIT-38.
PIT-38 and the NBP exchange rate. Return due by April 30. Every FX transaction is converted at the NBP average exchange rate from the preceding business day. Foreign brokers do not do this — it requires manual calculation. Brokers issuing PIT-8C (XTB, mBank, BOSSA) provide a ready summary in PLN.
IKE and IKZE. IKE: limit ~PLN 23,472/year, funds grow free of Belka tax, withdrawal after age 60 (and 5 years of saving) is exempt. IKZE: standard limit PLN 9,388, self-employed PLN 14,083; contributions are deductible from the PIT taxable base, withdrawal after age 65 is taxed at a flat 10%. A tax-free allowance against the 19% on standard accounts does not exist.
W-8BEN. The W-8BEN form reduces tax on US dividends from 30% to 15% under the PL-US treaty. Full scenario breakdown: BrokerFit tax guide.

Conclusions
No single broker in this lineup is "the best for a Polish investor". Each is the best fit at the intersection of (a) tax priority (PIT-8C vs manual PIT-38), (b) geographic exposure (GPW, abroad, or a mix), (c) trade size and frequency, and (d) willingness to use IKE/IKZE. Shortcuts:
- Lowest commission floor for active trading: Interactive Brokers, DEGIRO
- 0% commission on EU stocks up to a monthly threshold: XTB
- Automatic PIT-8C: XTB (in this lineup); outside the list — mBank, BOSSA, BM Pekao
- IKE / IKZE account: XTB (in this lineup); outside the list — mBank, BOSSA, BM Pekao, BM PKO BP
- GPW access + foreign markets in one account: XTB
- Broadest instrument access (options, futures): Interactive Brokers, EXANTE
- IPO allocations on retail orders: Freedom Finance
For an "accumulate UCITS over 15+ years at PLN 1,000-3,000/month" scenario, XTB / IBKR / DEGIRO each work — the fee gap over a decade is smaller than the gap between "I started today" and "I started a year from now". Run the math: ETF calculator and portfolio builder.
